A Japanese payslip (kyuyo meisai) lists base pay and allowances on one side and a long column of deductions on the other, almost always in Japanese only. This tool explains every common line—base pay, overtime, commute and housing allowances, health insurance, pension, employment insurance, income tax, resident tax, and nursing care insurance—in plain English.
Type the amounts straight from your slip and it adds up your gross earnings, total deductions, and the take-home amount actually transferred to your bank. It also shows what percentage of your salary each deduction eats up, so foreign residents can finally understand where their money goes and check that the numbers look right.
How to use
- Enter the yen amount for each earnings line on your payslip, such as base pay, overtime, and commute allowance.
- Enter the deductions in the lower section: health insurance, pension, employment insurance, income tax, and resident tax.
- Click the arrow next to any line to read a plain-English explanation of what that item is and how it is calculated.
- Read the auto-calculated total earnings, total deductions, and take-home pay, plus the percentage bar showing each deduction's share.
FAQ
- Is my salary data sent anywhere?
- No. Every calculation runs in your browser. The amounts you type are never uploaded, saved, or transmitted, so it is safe to enter your real payslip figures.
- As a foreigner, do I have to pay into the pension (kosei nenkin)?
- Yes. Full-time employees must enrol regardless of nationality. When you leave Japan you can claim a lump-sum withdrawal payment that refunds part of your contributions, for up to five years of enrolment.
- Why is no resident tax (juminzei) deducted from my slip?
- Resident tax is based on the previous year's income. In your first year in Japan you had no prior-year Japanese income, so it is not charged. Deductions usually begin in June of your second year.
- Is my commute allowance taxed?
- Train and bus commute allowances are tax-free up to 150,000 yen per month. The tax-free portion is excluded when income tax and resident tax are calculated, so it does not increase your tax bill.
- What is the nursing care insurance deduction?
- Nursing care insurance (kaigo hoken) applies only to people aged 40 and over. It is collected on top of health insurance to fund elderly care services. If you are 39 or younger you will not see this line.
